The race for .eco

Big Room
Dot Eco
Last week, a new player entered the Dot Eco race, as Big Room announces its plan to apply for the top level domain registry.

"Individuals and organizations want to cut through all the eco claims out there so they can make better choices," says Big Room co-founder Trevor Bowden. "Our Dot Eco will help them do that."

With representatives from local environmental organizations and businesses attending (including EcoFutures, Regnan, Institute for Sustainable Futures and of course, the Green Pages) the first regional consultation meeting in Sydney, the Canadian based group surveyed regional stakeholders in the "eco community" for their input on the potential domain.

Overall response seemed positive, with many representatives zeroing in on policy and disclosure and how to hold potential registrants responsible for their disclosure.

".eco is a unique global resource which must be stewarded effectively and responsibly to promote sustainability around the world," said Martin Atkin, Director of External & Media Relations for WWF International.

Big Room will submit its bid for Dot Eco when the application round for new gTLDs overseen by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers opens in the first quarter of 2010.
