Networking just got greener

D Link
D Link's newest addition to its energy saving line up is an 8 port switch that saves energy (and dollars) when it comes to your home network.

The second generation D-Link® 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch DGS-2208 provides up to 84% reduced power and comes with an ENERGY STAR compliant power supply. The company says this is one of four energy saving models that will be released this year.

The "green" switches work by detecting "active connections" and adjust power supplied to the ports accordingly. The process saves on power consumption and is ideal for home networks where computers are not always in use or don't use all the available ports in the switch. The switch is also capable of altering power usage based on the length of its cable

"Our goal is to maintain industry leadership as a pioneer of green networking technology by building in even more energy-saving features into our products without sacrificing performance," said AJ Wang, chief technology officer at D-Link. "We plan to continue the momentum of success we've realized with our first generation green products as we seek new avenues that protect the environment and help our customers save money in the process."
