Across Australia the number of capital city residents who believe the water situation is extremely serious has dropped by 17 percentage points - from 44% to 27% - in the past two years.
This is a key finding from the third annual NewsPoll survey commissioned by the Smart Approved WaterMark, the national symbol for products and services which assist in saving water outdoors.
The number of survey participants that consider the water situation to be either very or extremely serious also declined, from 84% in 2006 to 69%.
“In Sydney and Brisbane concerns have eased considerably, but the overall trend highlights the need to remind people that just because it rains they should not stop thinking about saving water,” says Julian Gray, CEO of Smart WaterMark.
On the subject of water restrictions, 73% of people in 2008 thought they are about right - compared with 54% in 2006. In particular, people in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth are much more comfortable with restrictions in 2008 than they were in 2006.
The survey also showed that people still consider technology to be the most effective mechanism to reduce water use followed by rebates, education, restrictions and last of all pricing.
In all cities there has been an increase in the number of people buying products with associated water rebates, with 6 in 10 Brisbane residents reporting they had purchased products, while in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne the figures were closer to 3 in 10.
NewsPoll conducted the survey in November 2008 in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, using a representative sample of 700 adults aged 18 years and over.
