Simple Strategies for Sustainable Behaviour Change – GreenBlox at the 2009 Sustainable Living Festival

Over recent years there has been an increasing focus on pro-environmental behaviour change. As the community, governments and industry become more aware of the environmental issues and consequences directly related to human activity and behaviour the need for and advent of pro-environmental behaviour change initiatives is growing. However, as time progresses effective implementation of these initiatives is more pressing. An illustration of this is the current drought and critical need for water conservation behaviours. It is therefore important to understand the attributes that are fundamental in accomplishing desired environmental behaviour change.

Framed within the context of sustainability, the workshop focuses on strategies designed to shift people’s thinking (and hence their behaviour); providing practical, useful tools to increase participant’s ability to influence others towards sustainable behaviour change using strategies drawn from psychological and sustainability research and practice.

The workshop incorporates practical exercises that are designed to give participants the confidence and ability to apply the concepts discussed in the session in a variety of settings.

The workshop will assist participants to:

• Define sustainable behaviour change
• Understand the fundamental questions that need to be considered in undertaking change
• Identify the levels of action
• Know the attributes required for sustainable behaviour change
• Apply actions for sustained change

Most notably, using their own individual real-life practical examples, participants will discover ways to implement and influence positive changes.
