Get into permaculture with your own worm farm
A worm farm is a great way to get yourself involved in permaculture. Worm castings, or vermicompost, act as a natural and organic fertiliser for any garden. A worm farm is easy to maintain and fun to keep, especially with kids.
Worm farms provide you with many benefits: your soil gets aerated and fertilised by the worms, whose castings enrich its composition. Your plants will be stronger and more resistant to disease as the richer environment strengthens them.
Types of worms
Compost worms are different from garden earthworms in that they
are surface feeders not deep tunnelers. Some common varieties of
compost worms include Red Wrigglers, Indian Blue and Tiger Worms.
You can get your worm farm kit and compost worms at a nursery,
hardware shop or organic food market. Ask your council too - some sell
discounted worm farms.

On Friday, the First Lady was joined by children from the Bancroft
Elementary School who helped her break the soil for the reported 1100 square
foot plot that has been ear marked for the project. The students will also be
working to cultivate the garden, and the First Family members, including the
President, are expected to help weed and tend the garden, "whether they like it
or not," said the First Lady.
