Samsung and LG have both unveiled solar powered mobile phones at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

HTW, a phone company in Hong Kong had first revealed its solar phone at CeBit in Hanover, but the phone was only available in the limited Asian market. This week, Samsung and LG have both unveiled their own solar phones that they will release to Europe later this year.

Samsung's Blue Earth is a full-touch screen phone and made from recycled plastic extracted from recycled water bottles. The user interface includes tools applications to bring awareness to carbon emissions and environmental issues. It comes with an energy efficient "eco mode" and pedometer that measures CO2 emissions reduced from walking instead of driving.

Meanwhile, LG has its solar powered handset that it plans to debut in Europe at the end of this year. Exposing the panel to the sun for ten minutes will give the phone enough power for a three-minute call, making it the perfect companion for emergency situations when no power is available to charge a dead battery. If left in natural light for long periods, the solar panel creates enough standby power to power the phone without any charging devices.

Both companies have other eco friendly products available, including blue tooth headsets and products with greener packaging intiatives.
