New Birth for Australia's Eco Label

green

Australia’s leading eco-labelling organisation, Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA), has undertaken a major restructure to position it for further growth. GECA’s Chair, Ed Warcaba, said today key changes included strengthening of governance, completing separation between GECA and its appointed auditor, Environmental Assurance (EA) and a transition which will lead to licensees being able to choose their auditor from a list of JAS/ANZ approved auditors.

The restructure follows the recommendations of internationally renowned management consultants, McKinsey and Co who assisted GECA to establish a pathway for the organisation’s future growth and to establish a structure that would allow the organisation to manage the dramatically increasing demand for independently audited eco-labelling. The key Board decisions announced today include:

• The signing of a new Heads of Agreement between GECA and EA to bring about a complete separation of powers between standard setter and auditor.

• There is also now no Board representation or any link with EA in governance or shareholding. GECA will transition in an orderly way to appointing multiple auditors within 18 months, – until then the Heads of Agreement will ensure that GECA will continue with EA as its auditor until 31 March 2011.

• The establishment of a best-practice Governance system for the Board and its committees which comprise Finance and Risk; Governance, Nominations and Ethics; Standards Advisory Committee and Marketing and Membership Advisory Committee.

• Broadening the membership base to enable GECA to harness diverse representative groups interested in promoting eco-labelling.

Mr Warcaba paid tribute to the enormous dedication and effort that GECA’s Board and executive staff have played in the role to set the organisation on a new growth path. Having taken on the leadership role of the Board tasked to reposition GECA, Mr Warcaba was confident that the organisation now had the structure and processes to grow rapidly.

The new structure ensures the organisation is now focused on its core business of developing standards and certifying products. The GECA eco-label is a brand that will continue to grow and gain value through its certified products. As a result Mr Warcaba wishes to announce that he is stepping down from the role of Chair with the appointment of Jack Josephsen as incoming Chair to lead the organisation forward. Mr Josephsen, an engineer, is Managing Director of Brisbane-based National Maintenance Products Pty Ltd, a company that formulates, manufactures and distributes only eco-certified products including industrial protective coatings, industrial and decorative seamless flooring and underwater applied coatings, adhesives and sealants. Jack says he is excited by his new role at GECA as he believes that eco-labelling has a critical role to play in Australia’s move to living sustainably.
