Researchers at MIT have been working on a new prototype, a foldable stackable "City Car" to solve congestion and space dilemmas in urban commuting.
MIT has been working on a number of designs and while the full scale version is still being designed, the team has recently released small scale working models to illustrate the space saving concept. The car is powered by a rechargeable battery, saving valuable petrol resources for our planet.
We are basically rethinking the car as we know it,” says NEXT Fellow Ryan Chin, a PhD candidate who is the project coordinator.
“For starters, there is no engine, at least in the traditional sense. The power comes from devices called Wheel Robots, which are self-contained, digitally controlled robotic wheels, complete with their own suspension and very simple connections to the car body.”
The team hopes to bring the design to manufacturers within the next three to four years.
